AI REFERRAL TRACKING

Which AI sent that customer?

People increasingly discover products through assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Analytics by 5H3LL shows which ones send visitors, and which of those visitors pay.

HOW IT WORKS

From an AI recommendation to a paying customer.

  1. 01 · Referral

    ChatGPT → your product page

  2. 02 · Intent

    Pricing viewed → signup

  3. 03 · Outcome

    £19 payment → ChatGPT source

Attributed

£19 payment → ChatGPT

The assistant passed its name as the referrer, so the revenue is credited to ChatGPT.

Not attributed · unknown source

£29 payment → unknown source

The referrer was missing or stripped, so the source cannot be named. The revenue still counts. It is shown as not attributed, not as zero.

Two visits before one payment

  1. Visit A

    Arrives from ChatGPT

Reads the pricing page, then leaves.

  2. Visit B

    Returns from Google

Comes back later through a search result.

  3. Payment

    £19 payment

    Completed after visit B.

Credited to Google. The payment goes to the visitor’s most recent visit from a known source. The earlier ChatGPT visit stays in their journey but does not get the revenue. If visit B had been direct, ChatGPT would be credited instead.

  1. STEP 01

    A referral arrives

When someone clicks a link inside an AI assistant, the app may pass its name as the referrer. We recognise ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Copilot and more, and group them under an AI channel.

  2. STEP 02

    They explore and act

Pages, goals and funnels show what that visitor did next: pricing viewed, signup completed, checkout started.

  3. STEP 03

    A payment is credited

With optional Stripe, Dodo or API revenue attribution, a verified payment is linked to the consenting visitor, so revenue shows up under the source that sent them.

The examples above are illustrations, not customer results. A payment without a known source is still counted and shown as not attributed.

SOURCES WE RECOGNISE

The assistants that send traffic.

These appear as named sources in your referrer and channel reports, next to search engines and social sites.

Honest limits

  • Treat AI numbers as a floor. A source is shown only when the referring app provides it. Missing referrers cannot always be identified. Those visits and payments still appear, as direct or not attributed, so an unknown source is not zero revenue. We never guess a source: add UTM tags to links you control and the source is named.
  • Revenue attribution is optional and needs a configured payment integration, checkout metadata and appropriate visitor consent.
  • Cookies are used. The tracker sets first-party cookies. Configure consent and your privacy information for your own use.
