Track newsletter issues beyond the click count

Give each email issue its own campaign and compare the visits and outcomes you observe after readers arrive.

The question to answer

Email clicks and website visits measure different things. Mail clients, privacy tools and link checking can affect click reports. A tagged link lets your website recognise an issue when someone arrives, then gives you a consistent way to inspect goals and attributed revenue without assuming a click report equals a person.

Before you start

A newsletter link you can edit and a tracked destination.

A consistent naming pattern for issue and placement.

Revenue attribution if the newsletter’s purpose includes purchases.

1. Name the issue consistently

Choose a short campaign identifier, such as newsletter-2026-10-27. Use lowercase names consistently so your reporting does not split one issue into several accidental variants.

2. Tag your outgoing links

Select Newsletter in the link builder. Use utm_source=newsletter and utm_medium=email, then your issue identifier for utm_campaign. Give different placements separate campaign names only if that distinction matters to the review.

3. Send yourself a test

Open the link from the delivered email rather than just the editor preview. Confirm tracking redirects preserve the query parameters and the final page loads correctly on a phone as well as a desktop.

4. Check the website report

Select the issue under Campaign. Inspect visitors, relevant goals and paid outcomes over a stated window. Compare issues after the same amount of time, rather than an hour-old send with a month-old one.

5. Record the editorial context

Keep the issue topic, audience segment, send date and offer beside your results. If an issue performs differently, test a change in topic, landing page or call to action rather than changing everything at once.

Worked example

The second issue has lower observed traffic but more credited revenue. Check whether the offer, audience or a single large purchase explains the difference before using the ratio to forecast another send.

Check your setup

The delivered email retains the intended tags.

The campaign name is consistent across the issue.

You compare equal observation periods after each send.

How to interpret the result

Mail-provider clicks may include scanning and do not equal tracked visitors.

Forwarded messages can retain the original campaign.

Do not put recipients’ names, email addresses or private subscriber IDs in URLs.

Your next action

Use one naming convention for the next few issues and record the content and offer alongside the campaign results.
